The History of Eldercare of Bemidji
Eldercare of Bemidji has a long history of providing excellent service and compassionate care to seniors and their families. Over the years our campus has evolved to include: Independent Living, Assisted Living, Rehabilitative Care, Skilled Nursing Care, and Memory Care. The same dedication and spirit of love and understanding exists in each of our Communities.
Originally, Long-Term Care Services were provided at the Lake Julia farm, 15 miles north of Bemidji. From 1917 until 1968, that facility was one of the few in the region dedicated to the ill and aged who required Long-Term Care. In 1968, the old Home was retired and a new 85 bed facility, Beltrami County Nursing Home, opened at our current location. The ownership of our Home change from public to private ownership in 1995, and shortly thereafter we changed the name of our Home to Havenwood Care Center. Over the years many renovations have taken place to better serve our residents and the need in our region. We currently utilize 90 beds in our three neighborhoods. Whether it’s Long-Term Skilled Nursing Care, Rehabilitation, or Memory Care that you are looking for; Havenwood Care Center is the place for you.
In 1999 a second facility, Heritage House of Bemidji, was constructed on the north side of our campus. Heritage House of Bemidji was initially licensed as a Foster Care Home but was changed to an Assisted Living Facility shortly thereafter providing services for a maximum of 10 residents. In 2008 Heritage House of Bemidji changed its name to Cedar Cottage and participated in a remodeling project which included the construction of an additional 5 suites for a total of 15 private suites. Many of the common areas were also updated to give the facility a real home like feel. Cedar Cottage offers a beautiful living experience in a family setting for the elderly person in need of quality care. Staff are available 24 hours-a-day to meet the needs of the residents at Cedar Cottage.
In 2000 a third facility, BirchHaven Village, was constructed on the west side of our campus. BirchHaven Village is an Independent Living Senior Community comprised of 42 apartments with the right combination of services and amenities to keep your life independent, pleasurable and challenging. BirchHaven Village is what retirement living was meant to be! Whatever your taste, there’s an apartment home at BirchHaven Village that’s right for you!
Our most recent addition to the campus of Eldercare of Bemidji is Tamarack Court, which is located on the south side of our campus. Tamarack Court opened the summer of 2008 and is a 32 unit apartment style Assisted Living Facility. Tamarack Court tenants live in spacious apartments that feel just like home; furnished and decorated with their most cherished belongings. They also enjoy the peace of mind in knowing that staff are available 24 hours-a-day to assist them with whatever their needs may be.
Although our campus has changed significantly over the years, the same dedication and spirit of love and understanding exists. We continue our pledge to maintain the highest possible standards of nursing care and to provide social, recreational, intellectual, spiritual, physical, and re-motivational activities specifically designed to meet the individual needs of those we serve.
Dementia Care and Training
Elder Care of Bemidji Communities are committed to providing quality care for your loved one. As part of our commitment, we provide all managers, nurses and direct care staff with Alzheimer's disease and dementia training within the first 6 months of employment, and then annually thereafter.
Each of these staff members go through the dementia training at the start of employment. Through the training program, staff members are guided through:
- An explanation of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia
- How these diseases affect an individual's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) and how to better assist individuals with individuals with ADLs
- Suggestions and ideas for problem-solving challenging behaviors, and
- How to understand behaviors as communication
Please feel free to ask our staff members about their dementia training and approaches they have found for helping your loved one.
